Creative Leiston

One of my goals in moving to Leiston was that I would focus on my writing, and leave the world of social enterprise behind. But then I discovered that 50 yards from my front door, a young couple have created a bold vision, and a community interest company through which it will be delivered.

Creative Leiston is crowdfunding to establish Project 40 Seven, which will be town centre venue where people can meet, share and borrow DIY tools from a Library of Things. The centre will also feature Leiston Pantry, a social supermarket where people on low incomes can buy discounted food.

Leiston sits on the Suffolk coast between Aldeburgh and Southwold, but is very different, with a rich industrial heritage and so a working town, rather than an up-market seaside resort. Leiston has a foodbank, while Southwold and Aldeburgh probably do not need one.

As with all crowdfunding campaigns, Project 40 Seven is only slowly gathering pace. Local businesses can pledge their support, and see their name on the wall of the new centre, so that everybody knows that they care about the town, as well as their bottom line.

Leiston needs social entrepreneurs and I’m delighted to be able to lend a hand and spread word about Project 40 Seven. Do you care enough to pledge your support?
