Am I unreasonable enough?

Last week I found time to venture through these green gates in East London to gain an insight into the lives and work of artists Gilbert & George. They've developed a unique way of commenting on the world using their bodies and bodily fluids to illustrate the points they want to make.

As well as their art, there is a film you can watch, which I did before catching my train home. The film includes footage of the very successful exhibition they staged in Moscow in 1990, which they funded themselves as nobody else would. I found that interesting as no doubt someone somewhere had decided that they were too edgy to be funded.

This reminded me that Bertrand Russell once said “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

I think that Gilbert & George's are good examples of 'unreasonable men' and can think of entrepreneurs I know who have brought about positive change by being unreasonable. Sadly though, for every unreasonable person, there are probably twenty more who choose to meekly toe the line.

I think that now more than ever, we need more people to be unreasonable.
